Tim Gear

Tim is a qualified BHS Intermediate Instructor with teaching experience of some 20 years. He is also a holder of Monty Robert’s Preliminary Certificate and holds a National Certificate in Management of Horses.

His experience ranges from affiliated show jumping to training with advanced level dressage of horses. However his passion is the starting and training of young horses using ‘pure sense’ horsemanship methods working with remedial horses to create a better trust and bond and developing the partnership between rider and horse.

Tim owns Holly a 6 year old bay mare who he backed himself using ‘pure sense’ horsemanship methods. Together they have started competing and are looking forward to a rewarding season next spring.

In addition he and Verne also own a 3 year old Appaloosa (Merriman) who started his training this summer and has now been turned away until next spring. Three previous untouched Appaloosa yearlings complete the “horse family” and these will be started as 3 year olds.

Verne Gear

Verne is a true “grass roots rider” first sitting on a pony at 2 years old. Verne owns Gally a 16 year old 16.2 hh (who was formally Tim’s show jumper); together they compete at riding club level, showing and dressage.

Verne also owns Saffron, a 4 year old chestnut section D mare. “Saffy” was purchased as a very nervous untouched 14 month old mare - terrified of her own shadow and was Verne’s first own ‘pure sense’ horsemanship “project”. Using the ‘Pure sense’ horsemanship training techniques Saffy is now backed and a very loving confident mare proving the old wives tail “don’t touch a chestnut mare” as a mere myth.

In partnership with Tim, Verne maintains the overall welfare and management of Nicholls Farm livery yard, clients and their horses and specializes in the ground work of client’s horses, working with them to assess the initial problem and agree and put together the training programme.

Customer care and contact are her prime concern!

Kirsty Smith

Kirsty joined the team in May 2006 and she currently owns Mary a 14.1hh 10 year old Cob x tb mare.  When Kirsty purchased Mary she was unschooled and could be rather difficult at times both ridden and handled. However during their year together and using the “pure sense” horsemanship method of training they have had a very successful show jumping season this summer and are reaping the rewards having being placed at every show they have attended.  Kirsty is looking forward to more show jumping in the following years and wants to try her “hoof” at cross country riding.

On a day to day basis Kirsty manages the yard and looks after the full time livery horses. In addition to this she assists Tim and Verne with the remedial horses care and welfare and assists them during the training session where appropriate.

Without her dedication, care and attention the team couldn’t function so effectively.
